General Advisory
- Farmers should begin land preparation for Rabi crops and arrange quality seeds and other essential inputs well in advance to ensure timely sowing. Weeding should also be carried out in agroforestry plantations during this month. During the rainy season, regularly monitor cucurbit crops such as bottle gourd, sponge gourd, bitter gourd, cucumber and ridge gourd for fruit fly infestation. Collect and bury infested fruits deep in the soil and install 4–8 traps per acre for effective management. During fruiting and after harvest, rake the soil around the crop to expose fruit fly pupae to sunlight and natural predators. Neem-based products may also be used as a biological control measure. Vegetable nurseries should be regularly monitored for whiteflies, leafhoppers and aphids, which can transmit viral diseases. If infestation is observed, spray Imidacloprid @ 0.3 ml/L of water to protect the seedlings.
